Indy Basketball Events Remain Carbon Neutral

All operations emissions from venues of tournaments were offset by renewable energy credits and carbon offsets

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Sports Corp, in partnership with AES Indiana, Heritage Interactive Services, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and IUPUI’s Office of Sustainability, have announced that venue operations of all practices and games during the basketball events last March and April were carbon neutral.

Heritage Interactive Services partnered with ClimeCo to contribute offsets to mitigate the basketball tournament’s carbon footprint. Students from IUPUI’s Office of Sustainability calculated actual emissions from data collected across the seven venues, including electricity, gas, steam, and chilled water, to determine the total carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) produced during each game and practice. Heritage worked with ClimeCo to purchase the carbon offsets necessary to balance nearly 5,000 tonnes of CO2e generated during the tournament. The team selected carbon reduction projects across the country, supporting wind energy, landfill gas capture and destruction, and preservation of natural forest habitat.

AES Indiana, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) and applied them toward electricity usage at Hinkle Fieldhouse, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indiana Farmers Coliseum, and the Indiana Convention Center. Throughout the tournament, more than 2.2 million kilowatt hours of energy were used to power the practice and tournament facilities. That is equivalent to the amount of electricity it takes to power approximately 2,200 households in Indiana for one full month.

Additionally, as part of Coca-Cola Consolidated’s Refresh Recycle Renew campaign, Republic, the Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium partnered together with Circular Solutions Advisors and Food Loops to get every bottle and can back from games and practices at these venues during the tournament. This effort resulted in 98 percent of all bottles and cans (117,596 cans/3.3 tons) consumed being made into new bottles and cans. All waste, including food, was captured at the championship game held at Lucas Oil Stadium with 70 percent of all waste (2.90 tons) being diverted from the landfill.

These efforts ensured that the tournament was operationally carbon neutral from the time teams arrived in Indiana to after the national championship on April 5 in addition to the recycling collection and landfill diversion efforts.

Heritage Sustainability Investments and ClimeCo provide capital to Restore the Earth Foundation

INDIANAPOLIS, July 15, 2021 – Heritage Sustainability Investments, LLC, a subsidiary of The Heritage Group and affiliate of Heritage Environmental Services, LLC, (collectively, Heritage), and ClimeCo joined together to provide strategic capital to Restore the Earth Foundation, Inc. (Restore the Earth) to provide for the native trees and planting for the reforestation of 4,000 acres of the Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area in Louisiana.  The freshwater marsh area will be planted with native Bald Cypress seedlings. In addition to the sequestration of CO2, the project will reduce flood and storm risk to local communities by creating a first line of defense in the form of healthy forest ecosystems and restore fragmented wildlife habitats. The project is anticipated to create 800,000 Climate Action Reserve Forward Mitigation Units (FMUs).

“The benefits of reforestation projects like this reach far beyond the immediately impacted areas,” said Chad Peterson, President of Heritage Sustainability Investments. “The work Restore the Earth is doing not only benefits the environment, but also the people and businesses in southern Louisiana. Collaborating with ClimeCo on this project will help us make a lasting difference in the community and drive future GHG reduction.”

people planting treesRestore the Earth pioneered the development of the Climate Action Reserve’s Climate Forward Reforestation methodology. The program provides a mechanism to quantify, verify and register FMUs, which represent emissions that are forecasted to be mitigated in the future, using rigorous and peer–reviewed carbon reduction project methodologies. FMUs will be marketed to voluntary buyers by ClimeCo to help fund future reforestation efforts in the basin. The program is designed to encourage companies and organizations to invest in projects that mitigate future greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“Restoration of degraded lands is one of the most critical project types society can undertake to meet the challenge of climate change,” says Derek Six, Chief Business Officer for ClimeCo.  “Reforestation provides a clear and enduring GHG mitigation impact, and generations to come will enjoy the wide array of ecological benefits these projects create. ClimeCo is excited to be working with Restore the Earth and to continue to support their ambitious goals in the Mississippi River Delta.”

Ballard Spahr, a national law firm with more than 600 attorneys in 15 offices nationwide, served as counsel to ClimeCo for the project. Attorneys supported the formation and management of a special purpose LLC for the effort, prepared the transaction and financing documents, and advised on matters involving the carbon offset protocols and requirements for generating the FMUs.

Heritage and Fielding partner to purchase Reclamation Technologies Inc. and accelerate growth strategies

INDIANAPOLIS, July 7, 2021 – Heritage Environmental Services, Inc. (Heritage), a leader in environmental and sustainability services, and Fielding Environmental (Fielding), a leader in resource recovery, have partnered to acquire Reclamation Technologies, Inc. (RTI) in Blaine, Minnesota.

RTI is an EPA-certified refrigerant reclamation company serving customers in the Midwest and Texas. They provide on-site services and have the capability to separate mixed gases. One of the main benefits of refrigerant reclamation is to give building owners and HVAC/R contractors a safe and affordable solution to manage refrigerants that are harmful to the ozone layer and contribute to global warning.  Reusing these materials also reduces consumption of non-renewable resources needed to make virgin refrigerants.

“The acquisition supports the expansion of Heritage’s service offerings in the refrigerants business, growing its platform beyond leadership in the Ozone Depleting Substances business. Heritage will now be able to offer its global customers a complete solution for the highest and best use of used refrigerant gases in partnership with another multi-generational circular economy-focused family business based in Canada,” said Jeff Laborsky, CEO of Heritage. “We’re excited to continue our purpose to protect human health and the environment and also prevent greenhouse gases from escaping into the atmosphere.“

“Everything came together in a perfect way.  I can’t think of a better partnership to service this space.  Together, Heritage and Fielding have the resources and experience to be the North American leader in refrigerant management services – whether gas requires reclamation, separation, or destruction, we have the solutions for our customers.  When the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act was announced we knew the timing for a partnership was right, and when we visited RTI we knew the acquisition was right.  I am very excited about our team and all we are going to do together,” said Katelyn Imrie, Executive Vice President of Fielding.
