Heritage Thermal Services and community groups announce citySweep 2016

EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio – Heritage Thermal Services (HTS) employees are commemorating Earth Day again this year with a free collection of household hazardous wastes for residents of the East Liverpool area. The event will be held April 23 from 7 a.m. to noon at the facility, which is located in the city’s East End.

At today’s news conference in East Liverpool City Hall, HTS representative Christine Noel said, “Once again, the event, which we have sponsored since 1997, is free of charge. And for the second consecutive year we are starting one hour earlier to accommodate the increased demand.”

Residents are invited to bring their household chemical products, old pharmaceuticals and e-scrap, which includes computers, televisions, light bulbs and batteries. Since the first collection, company employees have recycled or disposed of more than 168 tons of household chemicals and old electronics that otherwise would have been tossed in the trash or dumped into the local water supply, Noel said.

Members of the company’s Relay for Life Team will accept old cell phones to recycle or refurbish. Proceeds from the old phones help fund the fight against cancer. And East Liverpool City Hospital will replace old mercury thermometers with new digital ones.

Wallover Oil will be onsite to collect old automotive fluids for recycling. A long-time participant in the event, the company collects as much as 250 gallons of oil and other fluids each year. An East Liverpool police officer will be present so residents can drop off unused pharmaceuticals for safe disposal.

During the collection, employees will distribute more than $6,000 in grants to deserving schools and civic groups. Since the grant program began in 1998, more than one hundred local organizations have received more than $74,000 to fund worthy environmental projects in the community.

Noel pointed out a new logo that is featured on the front of this year’s event t-shirts.

“We are also pleased to announce the ‘We are East Liverpool’ logo in support of all of the positive developments that are taking place in the city.”

The household hazardous waste roundup is part of citySweep, East Liverpool’s spring-cleanup event. In addition to HTS and the City of East Liverpool, this year’s sponsors are: the Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Solid Waste District, Wallover Oil Co., Tim Hortons, East Liverpool City Hospital, Grand Ford, Southern Columbiana County Regional Chamber of Commerce, House of Prayer, Froggy 104.3 FM, Pickle 92.1, The Review, WTOV-TV9, East Liverpool Police Department, East Liverpool High School National Honor Society, East Liverpool Potter Football and Kent State University-East Liverpool Campus.
