Design, Build, and Operate

At Heritage, we are solutions providers. Our customers come to us with their problems and look to us to provide solutions that are safe, cost-efficient and compliant. The following are a few examples of our design, build, operate services.

Gasoline Refinery - Midwest

Background

In 1988, Heritage received an RFQ to provide temporary dewatering services for a gasoline refinery. Not only did Heritage meet the need for the temporary request, but also provided a long-term solution.  Heritage was awarded the work and construction was completed and the facility was operational all within a year's time.

Challenge

The first-third land ban (regulation changes) caused the refinery to discontinue placing "F and K" code waste sludge in a surface impoundment; an alternative solution was needed. The refinery asked that multiple mobile dewatering contractors provide estimates to process 200 gpm of oily sludge on a 24/7 basis until a permanent facility could be designed and built.

Heritage Solution

Heritage responded to the RFQ with a state-of-the-art, permanent dewatering system. Through Heritage's process knowledge and capital availability, we were able to design, build and operate the first of our two dewatering facilities within 180 days of the initial request.

Value

The refinery is in the business of making gasoline. They concentrate on outsourcing whenever possible. Heritage combined its processing knowledge and available capital to build and subsequently operate the plant more cost effectively and efficiently than the refinery could.

Steel Manufacturer - Midwest

  1. EAF Dust

    Challenge

The customer was looking for a more economical disposal option for 40,000 tons per year of EAF dust. They were also looking to meet a long-term hazardous waste minimization goal.

    Heritage Solution

Heritage designed, constructed and operated a reliable onsite EAF dust treatment system within _ months of award.  Heritage developed the technology and applied for a delisting for this stream. Within three+ years, the EPA delisting was approved and Heritage started shipping the delisted waste to our non-hazardous Subtitle D landfill. Heritage is currently scaling up a novel zinc recovery system to totally recycle the EAF dust.

    Value

The customer has seen their largest offsite hazardous wastestream eliminated since delisting treatment began in December 2001.

  2. Spent Pickle Liquor

    Background

This project involved neutralization of K062 spent pickle liquor (SPL) and rinse waters and dewatering of sludge onsite in a "temporary" treatment system. The company routinely shipped 4-10 loads of waste acid and rinse water per day to three offsite TSDs, including Heritage.

    Challenge

The customer's shipping needs fluctuated greatly and all TSDs found it difficult to supply acid trailers on a moment's notice. Also, Heritage had difficulty processing many loads of strong acid per day.

    Heritage Solution

Heritage proposed to set up a temporary onsite treatment system while the study was finished and the design of a new acid recovery and treatment system was completed. Heritage designed, constructed and operated a reliable onsite SPL acid treatment system to handle all volume generated. The initial need was for six months; Heritage was onsite for more than five years.

    Value

The customer saved 10% over offsite disposal rates being charged. Most importantly, all average and peak flow volumes were handled reliably with no need for concern about emergency truck scheduling or line shutdowns.
